Engaging Scenario

Have any of you ever voted? What have you voted for? What types of things do people usually vote for? (Think nationally and locally) How do they decide how to vote? What do they need to know?

Have you ever heard about the Nutmeg Book Award program? The Nutmeg Book Award asks students in grades 4 through 8 to read quality literature and choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles. We get to help decide the best book in the state of Connecticut. Students from all over Connecticut cast their votes during the month of January to determine the winners. Last year’s winners were The City of Ember(4 -6), and Hoot (7-8).

Here’s the situation. Connecticut kids have a wonderful opportunity to participate in an online project where they can not only read Nutmeg books and cast their vote, but they can campaign to persuade other students to read and vote for their favorite title. So, how can we decide how we will have our voices/votes matter?

This project is hosted by EASTCONN's Standards Based Learning Center
